ACGRID School Presentation

The objectives of the school:

  • Training of students and institute/university staff members to the grid technology.
  • Training of system administrators to the installation and maintenance of the EGEE grid services
  • Setting up of a number of grid services on local computers to launch kick-off or seed grid nodes.
  • Training of students to the use of simulation and data analysis tools to be deployed in a grid environment.

Based on Tien2/3 (Trans-Eurasia Information Network, http://www.tein2.net and http://www.tein3.net) which provides direct connectivity to Europe's GÉANT2 network, the ACGRID school promotes the setting up of collaborations between research groups in Europe and Asia using grids as the environment to share resources, tools and expertise in all fields of science and, in particular, life sciences and particle physics.

Tien2/3 is implemented by DANTE (Delivery of Advanced Network Technology to Europe) which provides the data communications infrastructure essential to the development of the global research community.

Reaching these goals

  • During the preparation of the school, teams of researchers in developing Asian countries which could benefit from the grid to break their isolation and achieve an easier integration in the international research community are identified.
  • Hands-on requiring the installation of local grid nodes, it gives the opportunity to train local system administrators to install and operate grid services.
  • The trainees will receive an education at the highest international level on grid research and technology and learn how to use tools deployed on grids for simulation and data analysis.
  • The trainees will leave the school with almost ready to use "gridified" applications which they will be able to deploy either on the local grid or on the grid infrastructure already deployed in Europe and in several Asian countries.

Programme of the school

The research communities primarily targeted are High Energy Physics and Biomedical sciences, but the programme is also relevant for other research areas such as computational chemistry, material science, climate and environmental science, disaster prediction, etc.

The programme will include a tutorial on the EGEE grid and the presentation of simulation and analysis tools which take fully advantage of the grid, for instance Geant4 in physics or Taverna in bioinformatics.

Specific application proposed by the trainees will be adapted to the grid with the support of the grid experts.

A special session will be dedicated to a symposium where a variety of speakers (Gov. Officials, industry leader, GRID expert and scientists involved in major GRID applications) will be invited. This symposium gives a larger visibility to the school and open the School scope.

School Format

a School session is a one week long training:
  • 1 day to finish the installation with the local system managers of the GRID tools. (most of the installation will have been done remotely with the help of the local system managers)
  • 3+1/2 days Student training
  • 1/2 day Symposium

We are discussing the possibility to broadcast the various sessions to other institutes or universities in the Asian Countries. The CanalAvist is a part of the ASEAN Virtual Institute of Science and Technology (AVIST) and the ASEAN Science and Technology Research and Education Network Alliance (ASTRENA) under ASEAN Committee for Science and Technology to provide channels for seamless education, teaching, training, conferencing, lectures, talks through ASEAN countries for ASEAN researchers and students.

Participation

Participation is welcome from all Asian countries. The expected attendees are as follows:
  • System administrators to learn on the installation and maintenance of grid nodes.
  • Scientists and students with interest to use the services offered by grids and the analysis tools deployed on grids.

Trainees will be registered through the school web site.
